Thanks Guido, I know, it's an old one, but I couldn't resist. Besides, if i didn't do it, someone else would have. I almost did 'Flushing Meadows' too, but managed to hold myself back. Good for you, 8.37!
No offense caption author but 14 votes..I think I'm one of the few who thinks that only an original caption should win on a new photo.. With 14 votes, actively searching through old photos for copies will become very attractive but destructive to the site...sorry just my opinion.
Hi Guido, like you, I'm amazed that it got any votes at all, never mind 14. It's interesting that 'Flushing Meadows' got 12 votes too, so maybe it's to do with new people coming to the site who haven't seen the originals. I usually don't have a problem with people reusing old captions in new ways (think of 'Chantelle' etc), but I admit that I haven't added to or modified it at all. As I said in my earlier post, if i didn't use it, someone else would have, and it would have got the same amount of votes.
All I can think of is that the influx of new people has caused voting habits to change. I've put three of my best captions ever (well, IMHO anyway) in this week and have only received a single vote for one of them, and yet an old meme like 'W.C. Fields' gets 14 votes. People now seem to prefer shorter puns and play-on-words than anything original, so the people who really want to win might be better off re-using old material than coming up with anything new. It's sad but true, but I won't be changing my ways for it. I'll always vote for an original, funny and/or clever caption over a straight re-run of an old meme. It's a terrible confession to make, but I actually wouldn't have voted for 'W.C. Fields' either, and I can understand why you're annoyed and perplexed that it's in the lead. I have no answers for you, I'm afraid.
Clear and understandable, I wish you all the votes caption author! Like I said on the forum; maybe I need to focus more on "original pictures" before coming up with captions for dog/cat, toilet bowls, beach & cup-photo's
Hello Guido, You pointed out to me that my caption 'De feet was staring him in de face' was very similar to a previous winning caption. It certainly was but I'm pretty new to captioneering and won't be bothering to trawl through old captions. Think I prefer to remain as original as I can be. I think it's more fun to invent your own stuff. However, I do reserve the right to repeat my own captions... in the forlorn hope that maybe someday someone will vote for them. Ever the optimist! Anyway, I suppose old captions will always be copied - humour is like that... all comedians 'borrow' material.

As far as I'm aware, the first W.C. Fields caption on site was ironically worded 'Another WC Fields picture.'

No more votes since this morning, I wonder if you've 'Gerald Ratnerred' your own caption.

Fraser, it completely deserved a good Ratnerring :)
