You're right that your wording is a tad more common. Not that I did it consciously, but leaning on "between" as the first word helps the mildly-amusing pivot; the placing of that word maybe made it work, slightly. Now, "the frog is dead," if there ever was one - between you and me : )

I think the build and the pivot are both stronger with "Just between you and me," because you're leading us in the direction of a confidential secret between the two of them, then the pivot makes it universal.
