I edited one 4 times the other day, once for spelling, once for punctuation, once for the same spelling back again because it was correct in the first place, and again to insert a comma that wasn't necessary, don't worry. I'll probably check necessary now and edit this.
Never fear, Anon, "spelled" is acceptable English, although "spelt" is more commonly used in Brit. Eng. As a rule, US Eng. will prefer the "-ed" version of the past tense/past participle, where the Brit. Eng. "-t" version is commonly used. So, you'd probably get "spelled" in the US, but "spelt" in the UK. In NZ we used "spelt", so "spelled" sounds weird to me too, but it isn't incorrect English.
As an aside, which most people will find totally uninteresting, "earnt" is a commonly used "-t" variation that isn't actually a proper word. At present, the OED only accepts "earned", but I expect "earnt" will formally enter the language one day.
Edit was just a capitalisation ... OCD/autistic tendencies, sorry.
