I've just found out that Donald Pleasance, who said the famous lines in 'The Great Escape', was in real life a WWII Fighter pilot who was shot down, held prisoner, and tortured by the Nazis. It kind of explains the tragedy of his character in the film, since he had lived it through bitter experience.
