I thought the same as you John and almost made the same edit suggestion but caption author's caption is true to the original quote.
John is obviously thinking of that other famous quote:''We shall bite them on the breeches.''
Churchill did not include the word 'them'.
Interesting. The commonly remembered quote sounds better than the actual quote.
Yep, audience editing: "We're gonna need a bigger boat"; "Luke, I am your father"; "Play it again, Sam" etc. It gets so the commonly accepted mis-quote sounds more natural than the original.
