Monty Python long boring and not original? It suits the picture perfectly and I applaud the Captioneer who took the trouble to print this sketch out. It made me laugh.
I've had a think about this, and the problem here isn't that quote has been copied, since there are loads of captions that are direct quotes from films ('We're gonna need a bigger ____', for example). The reason that those work is because they take a well-known phrase and put it into a completely new context, and the humour lies in the incongruities between the quote and the image. This image is a direct reference to Monty Python's 'Life of Brian', and so the caption simply reiterates the context of the photograph. It's not a rip-off or any less of a quote than any other famous phrase used on Captionme.
Frankly, I find most images containing text useless to caption, since they've already been captioned. I normally don't vote images down, but I made an exception with this one because it was bound to lead to exactly this kind of issue- limited reference material, few creative possibilities, and too specific in context to play around with. I'm not knocking the captioner for posting it up, since there's sod all else that anyone could do with this image. Well done, in fact, for managing to find a way to get some votes out of it.
Michael and others, Thanks for the comments, as the caption poster let me talk you through my thought process before posting. When I saw the image I immediately thought of the Monty Python sketch and spent several minutes chuckling to myself. I decided to post the entire scene to give other Python fans (and non fans) a smile. If you don't appreciate it, that's fair enough not sure I agree that captioneers should be posting that a caption is rubbish - do they make this comment on all Captions they don't like or just this one.
Thank you Ian for your caption. My Work Mate and I were working 6 pm to 6 am last night, we both loved your caption. However we spent most of the night debating if Life of Brian or In search of the Holy Grail was funnier. He is definite that it is Life of Brian, but I think In search of the Holy Grail is the best. Your caption got us through 12 hours, and we even debated the comments.
Cheers Neil. Let me add to your debate. I felt, at the time, that Life of Brian was head and shoulders above Holy Grail. However, having re-watched them recently I think Brian remains the better feature film but I enjoyed Holy Grail more. Hmmm don't think that helps that much.
Well at least he's not quoting Blackadder. Great show of course, but people who still quote it should be forced to fellate Rowan Atkinson and quote a putdown between gulps.
Why are people voting for this? It's long, boring and not original.
8:03pm
Sorry, are we all supposed to vote for the same caption anon?
8:05pm
It's not a caption. It's a huge section of text taken from a film.
8:07pm
Agreed, rubbish...copied and not funny
8:08pm
If it raises a smile, then it's worth a vote.
You are free not to vote.
8:09pm
Why are all the negative comments anon?

For me Holy grail has moments but life of brian is the better....and glad you had a productive nights work Neil.

What an interesting debate! Can we have more of these in future please?
Also- although Holy Grail and Life of Brian are about equally funny, LoB is more complex and sophisticated, and has a much better ending :)
