I reckon one of the Friends writers must have been a Douglas Adams fan. Strongly resembles a Dirk Gently scenario, although that did involve time travel and dematerialisation...

I used to watch Friends all the time, but I must confess it doesn't ring a bell. That was a long time ago though.
