Got my vote, but perhaps a nod to 12:44:34?

Many thanks for your vote. It's a tricky one that I am open to opinions on. Does a theme within a caption mean it is then 'owned' or do other captions using the same theme are a 'copy' as I had no intention to steal a caption. Do votes not decide? Answers on a post card.

Personally I think if a theme is borrowed, then the original poster should be given a nod. The thing is, given a good idea to start with, often improvements can be made. I'm not saying they shouldn't be, just that if they are then the original source should be recognised. Voters can then decide whether the first use of the theme deserves their vote, and/or a possibly improved usage of that theme.

Maybe it is worth a discussion to agree on how we would like a time stamp or nod to be received. I think that normally similar captions are just two people having the same idea and the second person has not noticed the first caption. This site is fun and light hearted and I think most people should be given the benefit of the doubt, especially if their use of the idea is good. Saying that, the first version deserves a bit of advertising (that's the way I see a timestamp which asks for no action). I think perhaps a nod could be restricted to times where we deliberately use someone else's idea or gain inspiration from them. A nod feels a bit strange when both captioneers had the ideas independently. Perhaps rather than using a short word to convey so much meaning we should just say what happened eg "˜just noticed ..... and realised our captions are similar, hope we both get votes. I just hate to see people delete their captions. I put a timestamp against a caption recently that used a very similar key word. They had 3 votes. I was mortified when they deleted their caption in response. Whoever that was I am really sorry.

Congratulations Chris Keegan. Good caption. Hoping it's not informed by experience. Well done regardless.
